Pongal is a festival that was celebrated by Tamilians.  Pongal is celebrated annually on the 1st of Thai month(Tamil calendar).  It is celebrated in January.  Pongal is a festival for Tamils and is celebrated only by Tamils.  The Pongal festival will be celebrated for four days this includes Bhogi, Maatu Pongal, Kaanum Pongal/Thiruvalluvar's day.  Each day represents those special things.  It is also considered a festival for farmers.

On this day(Pongal day) people celebrated by wearing new traditional clothes, and in the early morning, people prepared chakra and ven Pongal in the traditional way using a Clay pot stove.  They prepared using fresh rice, ghee, black bar, milk, and so on.  Then Pongal will be served for God.

Before the Pongal, they decorated their house by cleaning and paint and tieing the mango leaves.  And they bought the sugar cane for eating while the Pongal festival.  That is the real treat of the Pongal festival.

What is Pongal and the festivals followed by pongal and who, why celebrate this?

Chakra Pongal

Chakra Pongal(sugar Pongal) is special at the Pongal festival.  Chakra Pongal is nothing but this is a South Indian festival especially it was prepared by Tamil people.  This prepared by using a black bar (instead of sugar), Ghee, Fresh rice, milk, and water.  And on that day it will be prepared in the traditional way.  After they prepare it they offer it to the sun god.

Jallikattu

Jallikattu is a heroic sport.  Of course, I think everyone knows about this.  This is because of the protests in Tamil Nadu that have caused the world to look back on the banning of the Jallikattu.  The Jallikkattu game held in Alankanallur is famous all over the world.
Jallikkattu is a game in which the bulls are caught by the players.  After the bull is unloaded from the gate(vaadivasal), the bulls (kaalai) must hold the walls(madhil) and restrain the bull.  The one who tames the most bulls is the winner

Pongal competitions

The Pongal festival follows the heroic game of the Tamils with games for both children and the elderly to attend. Not only jallikkattu but also a lot of traditional games like uriyadi, valukkumaram, lift the rock(ilavetta Kal) are held.  The competition will also be celebrated in school colleges, villages, and towns.

Festivals that follows Pongal

Pongal Thirunal is celebrated for a total of four days.
  • Bhogi
  • Pongal/Farmer's day
  • Maatu Pongal
  • Kaanum Pongal/Thiruvalluvar's day

Bhogi

Bhogi is celebrated the day before Pongal.  On this day they will get rid of the old things in the house and clean the house and decorate the house.  What this means is that you have to throw away all the old bitter memories in your mind and welcome the new happiness.  In Tamil "Palaiyana kalidhal Pudhiyana pugudhal".  This day can also be said to be the day to prepare for Pongal.

Pongal

Pongal is celebrated by all Tamil people.  The festival will be celebrated by all castes and all religions cause this is the tamilan festival.  This will be celebrated on 1st thai.  "Thai pirandal vazhi pirakkum" means the month of Tai comes and the way to happiness is born.
Another very important thing about this festival is that it is celebrated as a festival for those who have it.  On this day they will be thanked for their hard work.

Maatu Pongal

On this day they thank the cattle.  On that day, they bathe the cattle and worship them.  In Tamil Nadu, cattle are worshiped as equal to the deity.  And they will take care of it at home without seeing it as a pet.

Kaanum Pongal

Kaanum Pongal is the last day of the Pongal festival.  That day is really special and awesome.  That day they are gonna meet their relatives and make some fun even hang out.  I don't know how many festivals have this kind of celebration.  This helps to keep the relationships are in alive.

This is the Pongal Festival celebration.  Try to celebrate all festivals this way.  Have a nice day.
